Queer up duck!

Our lovely resident Ritchie was thrilled to be a part of the launch  of Queer Up Duck in Nottingham!  A stunning celebration of the LGBTQ+ community, featuring beautiful portraits of some of the city’s key figures (including our very own Ritchie) who embody pride, resilience, and joy. This project highlights the importance of us supporting our resident's passions and life’s work, shining a light on what truly matters to them. At Westdale Care Home, we’re proud to be an inclusive home, making sure everyone feels seen and celebrated.

'A Vintage Gay Activist 'with a PhD from the University Of Life’.

Richie came out on national TV in 1976. He partook in many campaigns throughout his life, including the Campaign for Homosexual Equality, the Gay Liberation Front, the Nottingham Lesbian Gay Switchboard and the Labour Campaign for Gay Rights. During the 1980s and 1990s he was crucially involved in Nottingham's thriving scene of local LGBTQ+ periodicals, publishing and distributing magazines such as Outright across the East Midlands (providing same sex dating before the online age when the local press refused to have anything to do with us). Richie became Nottingham’s first openly gay city councillor in 1983. For many years he ran Stonewall Breaks - residential events which worked to interrupt isolation for many. At 85, he has never retired from activism.

A short message from Richie for future generations of Notts LGBTQ+ to empower them:

“Our identity is so important. It took me some years to accept myself as a gay man. Even now I’m still wrestling with feelings of self worth, so be kind to yourself. Most importantly, stand up for others struggling for their human rights. Together we are strong.”
